2010 June - Dr. Mrs. Manjiri Deo Workshop

One of the most respected Kathak teachers on the Indian dance scene, and disciple of Nataraj Gopi Krishna - a man so identified with dancing that Indian dance is unthinkable without remembering the maestro.

Dr. Manjiri Deo received her first lessons in dance from Pt. Badrinath Kulkarni in Kolhapur. She received advanced training in Kathak from Mrs. Asha Joglekar, Nataraj Gopi Krishna and Dr. Sitara devi. Mrs. Deo received her doctoral degree from Gaandharva Mahavidyaalaya for her thesis “An analytical study of applied Kavitta Chanda in Kathak dance”. She has authored three books on Kathak including “Nrutya Saurabh” that received an award from Govt. of Maharashtra.

The state of Maharashtra was formed within the republic of India on May 1st, 1960. The words Maharashtra comes from ‘Great Nation’. This year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the formation of the state of Maharashtra. To commemorate this occasion we come together to witness our history unfold, from the time immemorial when this land was called Dandakaaranya roughly translates to Jungle of punishments to the year 1960.
